Happy New Year 2004!

Starting with this issue, our Associate Editors have accepted ownership of the sections that we have introduced during 2003. Michael Hayduk is Associate Editor of Hot Topics, David Plant is Associate Editor of Publications, and Diana Huffaker is Associate Editor of Conferences. The "Research Highlights" section, Chapter Section, and Career section will also continue. We'd appreciate your feedback on this material, as well our new color cover and format!

In this issue, our lead "University Research Highlights" article is "Design Tools for Photonics: Rising to the Challenge," by Trevor Benson, Phillip Sewell, Ana Vukovic, Svetlana Boriskina, and Steve Greedy at the George Green Institute for Electromagnetics Research, University of Nottingham, Nottingham, UK.

The three featured Hot Topics articles are (1) "Efficient compression of digital holograms for Internet transmission of three-dimensional images" by Thomas Naughton and John McDonald at the National University of Ireland and Bahram Javidi at the University of Connecticut; (2) "3D Image Sensing and Reconstruction with Time-Domain Multiplexed Computational Integral Imaging (CII)" by Adrian Stern and Bahram Javidi ; (3) "3D Displays" by Jung-Young Son at Hanyang University in Seoul, Korea.

Please feel free to suggest comments and suggestions to improve the Newsletter and to submit articles for the "Hot Topics" and "Feature" sections: myl@us.ibm.com.
