IEEE Photonics Society 2010 Young Investigator Award Recipient: Sander Lars Jansen

The Young Investigator Award was established to honor an individual who has made outstanding technical contributions to photonics (broadly defined) prior to his or her 35th birthday. Nominees must be under 35 years of age on 30 September of the year in which the nomination is made. Candidates need not be members of the IEEE or the Photonics Society. The deadline for nominations is 30 September.
The 2010 Young Investigator Award will be presented to Sander Lars Jansen, “for pioneering contributions in optical OFDM for fiber-optic transmission systems.” The presentation will take place during the Plenary Session held at OFC/NFOEC 2010 which is taking place 21–25 March 2010, at the San Diego Convention Center, San Diego, CA USA.

Sander Lars Jansen

Sander Lars Jansen received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees (with highest honors) in Electrical Engineering from the Eindhoven, University of Technology, The Netherlands. During his PhD, he conducted research at the Siemens AG in Munich, where he was involved in several projects ranging from optical time domain multiplexing to advanced modulation formats and optical phase conjugation.
From September 2006 to May 2008 he was an Associate Research Engineer at KDDI R&D Laboratories in Saitama, Japan where he specialized in OFDM for fiber-optic transmission systems. Since June 2008 he has been with Nokia Siemens Networks in Munich, Germany where he works on modulation formats and the development of photonic cross connects for next generation transmission systems. His research interests range from modulation formats and coherent detection to wavelength selective switching and dynamic optical networks.
Dr. Jansen is an associate editor for the IEEE Photonics Technology Letters and a Technical Committee member of the OFC and OECC. Recently he has been invited to give a short course on optical OFDM at the OFC 2010. Dr. Jansen holds several US-registered patents and has (co-) authored more than 80 peer-reviewed journals and conference contributions worldwide. He was awarded the IEEE Photonics Society (formerly LEOS) Graduate Student Fellowship in 2005 and received the “KDDI Best Patent Award” in 2007.
