Awards and Recognitions at LEOS 2001


A special Awards/Conference Reception will be held on Monday evening at the LEOS Annual Meeting. The following awards will be presented during the reception:

The IEEE/LEOS William Streifer Scientific Achievement Award will be presented to Joe C. Campbell and Stephen R. Forrest “for contributions to the development of high-speed, low-noise long-wavelength avalanche and p-i-n photodiodes.” Wim Nijman will be presented the Aron Kressel Award “for pioneering work in GaAs crystal growth for Compact Disc lasers and founding the Philips semiconductor laser industry.” This year’s LEOS Distinguished Service Award will be presented to Thomas Giallorenzi “for his dedication and impact as LEOS President and founding Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology, and his significant contributions to LEOS through his leadership, initiative, and ongoing, dependable contributions to conferences and publications.”

The Italy and Moscow Chapters have been voted “Chapter-of-the-Year”. Other LEOS chapter awards will be presented to Montreal for “Most Improved Chapter”, Scottish Chapter for “Most Innovative Chapter”, and both Turkey and Ukraine Chapters for “Chapter with the Largest Membership Increase.”

The 2000-2001 Distinguished Lecturers, Ursula Keller, Shuji Nakamura, Richard DeLa Rue, and Alan Willner, will be recognized for their service to the Society. Recognition as elected members of the LEOS Board of Governors will be given to Steve Alexander, Neal Bergano, Giok-Djan Khoe, and Alan Willner.

LEOS 2000 Best Student Paper Award will be presented to M.A. Mahdi .
